Green Hat
 Case Study from
St Martins School

We wanted to make Christmas brighter for... Children in Christchurch whose Christmas needed brightening because they were going through some hard times.
We wanted to do this by... Purchasing toys to donate to the 'Toys for Tots Christmas Appeal' co-ordinated by the Salvation Army.
Our plan of action...

We needed to raise some money so that that we could buy the presents.
  • We made gift boxes out of used Christmas paper and card. We filled the boxes with fudge that we made at home.
  • We made felt Christmas decorations.
  • We sold the fudge boxes and decorations at our school's Christmas tree sale at the start of December.
  • We managed to raise just under $200!!

Time to buy the presents:

  • We formed groups with 4 students in each group. Each group was given a particular age and gender to buy for. (E.g. a 5-6 year old boy)
  • We talked about the things we had to consider when buying a present. Our ideas included: need for safety, not to promote violence, wide appeal, toys that would keep children busy for a long time...
  • Group at a time we visited the Warehouse taking the money we had raised. We spent a lot of time looking and discussing, before purchasing our toys.

Ready for delivery:

  • Back at school we made wrapping paper and cards.
  • We felt really good when we dropped our parcels off at the 'Toys for Tots' collection point.
  • The people at the Salvation Army made sure that the presents were delivered.
