Find out about Simpson and his donkey. When were they
famous and where? What did they do that was so special? How and why did
they do this thing? Who did they do it for?
Imagine that you are a newspaper reporter during the
first World War. Your assignment is to write an obituary for Simpson and
his donkey. As well as the article, the newspaper also need an attention
grabbing headline and a picture with a caption.
If you have access to a computer, you could complete
this assignment using a word processing or desktop publishing programme.

Message to a soldier.
If you lived during one of the World Wars, what would
your life be like? Imagine your dad or uncle is away fighting in the war.
How might your mum or auntie be helping the war effort? What might you
be doing? What would dad tell you about the war, in his letters home.
Write a newsy letter to your dad or your uncle. Tell
him about what has been happening at home, what have the family been doing.
Imagine you are replying to a letter he has sent you, so it would be good
to talk about what is happening in his life too. Use what you have learnt,
plus your creative and imaginative mind to create an interesting and realistic
letter.
